ABOUT MARK SMYLIE AND ARTESIA: Mark Smylie’s epic military fantasy comic book, Artesia, was first published by Sirius Entertainment in 1999. Mark was nominated for the Russ Manning Award for Best Newcomer that year, and for an Eisner Award for Talent Deserving of Wider Recognition in 2001. His illustration work has appeared in books by Wizards of the Coast, White Wolf, and Judges Guild, and on collectible cards for AEG, and he has authored a role-playing game based on Artesia that won the Origins Award for Role-Playing Game of 2006. Mark founded Archaia Studios Press (ASP) in 2002 as a self-publishing home for his comic book, and with business partner Aki Liao expanded the company to include a wide variety of creator-owned and foreign titles, including Mouse Guard, Robotika, The Killer, and Okko. ASP was acquired in 2008 by Kunoichi, Inc., and is now known as Archaia Entertainment LLC.
Mark collaborated with filmmaker Hidetoshi Oneda on the script to the short film La Belle Dame Sans Merci, based on the poem by John Keats. La Belle Dame Sans Merci has been shown at over 20 international film festivals, and has won the Audience Award at its premiere at the Inspiration Film Festival; Best Science Fiction/Fantasy Film at the first Comic-Con International Independent Film Festival; and Best Short Award, Super Dry Award, and Governor of Tokyo Award at the Short Short Film Festival in Tokyo, amongst others.
